Village Voice is a long standing o.g in New York culture. As a youngster hanging downtown, I would always kill time by looking at the weekly publication. When the Village Voice changed their format and made the paper into a free weekly thats when I appreciated it more. It was always my go to, to see which music artist were in town. Indeed , I would check the tits and ass in the back pages and I’m sure I applied to test some shit for 2500. These days I don’t get to grab the newspaper as much as I used to but I try to go to their events. In March, Village Voice will be celebrating their 9th annual Choice Eats. The awesome thing about this event , the food represents all walks of life. It’s a must go to event. Straight New York talk.

Omakase is the Japanese tradition of letting a chef choose for you. The word actually means “I will leave it up to you”. It’s always an adventurous experience and will allow the chef to show off his creativity. Pinky Finger Up accepted an invitation to Sushi Seki tucked in Restaurant Row in Hell’s Kitchen. The two-tiered restaurant’s main floor is decked out with a large bar and a communal table. We started the evening with a few holiday inspired cocktails. After getting a tingle from the libations, the next move was to the second floor dining area. Upstairs features an artisanal whisky and sake bar followed by three Tatami rooms for private dining. The coliseum of the evening was sitting at the bar watching the chef perform his magic. Check the pics for all the tasty delights.

Took a little time off to get my head right. I thought about whats next for PFU and for me in general. Along my journey, I’ve been faced with haters and folks who try to lay obstacles on my path to greatness. I almost let them get under my skin but I realized how far PFU has grown and the potential. So I decided to celebrate my greatness by attending New York Magazine Taste event. I’ve been going to this event for a very long time and it keeps getting better every year. Pinkyfinger up had the honor to celebrate A Second Helping of Life at Pier 60. The event featured some of the top women chefs as they serve their signature dish to support the fight against breast and ovarian cancer. There was tons of great food.

As we drift into Autumn season, the good folks at Northside delivered their annual Taste Talks festival. This year the festival was curated by The Roots drummer ?uestlove. Filled with panels with talks about the future of food and of course some great food. I happened to attend the All-Star BBQ, which went down like this.

Lexus, Diageo Wines and Uptown Magazine joined forces to put together a nice little soiree. Chefs for the evening was The Cecil’s JJ Johnson and Don Bowie of NoBar in Brooklyn. Yes, the food was on point.
Aiiight…I think it’s time to stop sleeping on The Flatiron District. The neighborhood is filled with so many landmark dining experiences and spots for your drunken pleasure. Pinker Finger Up rolled in Madison Square Park ready to devour some of the best bites at The Celebrate Flatiron Chefs event. This event seems to be on Mother Nature’s bad side when it comes to the weather. As it did last year, the rain came pouring down. Let’s hope maybe they’ve learned their lesson and wont hold the event during the MLB All Star Game.

Summer in the city is in full swing and before you know it, summer will be gone. On my to do list is to enjoy a few bbq’s, sip on as many Guiness’ as I can, hit the beach, try as many ice cream spots and of course go to the best food tastings in the city. The event that tops the list is City Harvest’s Summer in the City.
Founded in 1982 as the world’s first food rescue organization, City Harvest (cityharvest.org) is dedicated to helping feed the nearly 1.4 million New Yorkers facing hunger. City Harvest will collect 55 million pounds of excess food from restaurants, grocers, bakeries, manufacturers, and farms, and deliver it free of charge to 500 community food programs across the city this year. In addition to helping meet the immediate need for food, City Harvest takes a long-term approach to fighting hunger by partnering with residents, local organizations and businesses through Healthy Neighborhoods programs which increase the availability of affordable fruits and vegetables in low-income communities and provide the nutrition education and resources to maintain a wholesome, food-secure diet.
